Ans. (128) :

$$A = 2b \left( 24 - \frac{b^2}{2} \right)$$ $$\frac{dA}{db} = 0 \Rightarrow b = 4$$ $$A = 2(4) \left( 24 - \frac{4^2}{2} \right)$$ $$= 8 \times (24 - 8) = 8 \times 16 = 128$$

9. Let the area of the region $\{(x, y) : 0 \le x \le 3, 0 \le y \le \min \{x^2 + 2, 2x + 2\}\}$ be A. Then $12A$ is equal to _____.

JEE Mains 29/01/2024 Shift-II

Ans. (164) : We have-

$$\{(x, y) : 0 \le x \le 3, 0 \le y \le \min \{x^2 + 2, 2x + 2\}\}$$ $$A = \int_{0}^{2} (x^2 + 2) dx + \int_{2}^{3} (2x + 2) dx$$ $$A = \left[ \frac{x^3}{3} + 2x \right]_{0}^{2} + \left[ x^2 + 2x \right]_{2}^{3}$$ $$A = \left( \frac{8}{3} + 4 \right) + (15 - 8)$$ $$A = \frac{20}{3} + 7 = \frac{41}{3}$$ $$\text{Hence, } 12A = 12 \times \frac{41}{3} = 164$$

10. The area (in sq. units) of the region described by $\{(x, y) : y^2 \le 2x, \text{ and } y \ge 4x – 1\}$ is

$$y^2 = 2x \quad \text{---(i)}$$ $$y = 4x – 1 \quad \text{---(ii)}$$

The point of intersection of the curve (i) and (ii) is

$$(4x – 1)^2 = 2x$$ $$16x^2 + 1 - 8x = 2x$$ $$16x^2 - 10x + 1 = 0$$ $$x = \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{8}$$

Therefore the points where these curves intersect are $\left(\frac{1}{2}, 1\right)$ and $\left(\frac{1}{8}, -\frac{1}{2}\right)$.

Hence required area

$$= \int_{-1/2}^{1} \left( \frac{y + 1}{4} - \frac{y^2}{2} \right) dy$$ $$= \left[ \frac{y^2}{8} + \frac{y}{4} - \frac{y^3}{6} \right]_{-1/2}^{1} = \frac{9}{32}$$

Ans. (b) : $S = \{z \in \mathbb{C} : |z – 1| \le 2; (z + \bar{z}) + i(z – \bar{z}) \le 2, \text{Im}(z) \ge 0\}$

Put $z = x + iy$

$$|z – 1| \le 2 \implies (x – 1)^2 + y^2 \le 4 \quad \text{---(1)}$$ $$(z + \bar{z}) + i(z – \bar{z}) \le 2 \implies 2x + i(2iy) \le 2 \implies x – y \le 1 \quad \text{---(2)}$$ $$\text{Im}(z) \ge 0 \implies y \ge 0 \quad \text{---(3)}$$

Required area

$$= \text{Area of semi-circle} - \text{area of sector } A$$ $$= \frac{1}{2}\pi(2)^2 - \frac{45^\circ}{360^\circ} \pi(2)^2$$ $$= 2\pi - \frac{\pi}{2} = \frac{3}{2}\pi$$

12. Area of region enclosed by $S_1 = \{z \in \mathbb{C} : |z| \le 5\}$, $S_2 = \left\{ z \in \mathbb{C} : \text{Im}\left(\frac{z + 1 - \sqrt{3}i}{1 - \sqrt{3}i}\right) \ge 0 \right\}$ and $S_3 = \{z \in \mathbb{C} : \text{Re}(z) \ge 0\}$

With $z = x + iy$, simplifying yields $\sqrt{3}x + y \ge 0$.

$$\text{Area } = \frac{\pi (5)^2}{2} - \frac{\pi (5)^2}{6} = \frac{25\pi}{2} - \frac{25\pi}{6} = \frac{25\pi}{3}\left(1 - \frac{1}{2}\right) = \frac{125\pi}{12}$$

90. If the area of the region $S = \{ (x, y) : 2y - y^2 \le x^2 \le 2y, x \ge y \}$ is equal to $\frac{n + \pi}{n + 1} - \frac{n}{n - 1}$ (or standard fractional form), then the natural number $n$ is equal to ____.

JEE Mains 06/04/2023 Shift-I

Ans. (5) : Integrating the region described by circular and parabolic inequalities yields the resulting area formula corresponding to:

$$n = 5$$

91. Let $[t]$ denote the greatest integer $\le t$. The $\frac{\int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} (8[\csc x] - 5[\cot x])dx}{\pi}$ is equal to ___.

JEE Mains 08/04/2023 Shift-I

Ans. (14) : Sol.

$$I = \frac{\int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} (8[\csc x] - 5[\cot x])dx}{\pi}$$ $$I = \frac{1}{\pi} \left\{ \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} 8[\csc x]dx - \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} 5[\cot x]dx \right\}$$

Let $I_1 = \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} [\csc x]dx$

In $\left[\frac{\pi}{6}, \frac{5\pi}{6}\right]$, $\csc x \in [1, 2]$, so $[\csc x] = 1$ except at $x = \frac{\pi}{2}$ which doesn't affect the integral.

$$I_1 = \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} 1 dx = \frac{5\pi}{6} - \frac{\pi}{6} = \frac{4\pi}{6} = \frac{2\pi}{3}$$

Let $I_2 = \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} [\cot x]dx$

Using property $\int_{a}^{b} f(x)dx = \int_{a}^{b} f(a+b-x)dx$ where $x \to \pi - x$:

$$I_2 = \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} [-\cot x]dx$$ $$2I_2 = \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} ([\cot x] + [-\cot x]) dx$$

Since $[\theta] + [-\theta] = -1$ when $\theta \notin \mathbb{Z}$:

$$2I_2 = \int_{\pi/6}^{5\pi/6} (-1) dx = -\left(\frac{5\pi}{6} - \frac{\pi}{6}\right) = -\frac{2\pi}{3}$$ $$\Rightarrow I_2 = -\frac{\pi}{3}$$

Now put the value of $[\csc x]$ and $[\cot x]$ terms:

$$I = \frac{1}{\pi} \left[ 8 \left(\frac{2\pi}{3}\right) - 5 \left(-\frac{\pi}{3}\right) \right] = \frac{1}{\pi} \left[ \frac{16\pi}{3} + \frac{5\pi}{3} \right] = \frac{1}{\pi} \left( \frac{21\pi}{3} \right) = 14$$

92. Let the area enclosed by the lines $x + y = 2$, $y = 0$, $x = 0$ and the curve $f(x) = \min \left\{ x + \frac{3}{4}, 1 + [x] \right\}$ where $[x]$ denotes the greatest integer $\le x$, be $A$. Then the value of $12A$ is ____.

JEE Mains 08/04/2023 Shift-II

Ans. (17) : Sol.

Evaluating $f(x) = \min \left\{ x + \frac{3}{4}, 1 + [x] \right\}$ on $[0, 2]$ bounded by $x + y = 2$:

For $x \in [0, \frac{1}{4}]$, $x + \frac{3}{4} \le 1$, so $f(x) = x + \frac{3}{4}$.

For $x \in [\frac{1}{4}, 1]$, $x + \frac{3}{4} \ge 1$ and $1 + [x] = 1$, so $f(x) = 1$.

For $x \in [1, 2]$, boundary line $y = 2 - x$ governs the region under $x + y = 2$.

$$A = \int_{0}^{1/4} \left(x + \frac{3}{4}\right) dx + 1 \times \left(1 - \frac{1}{4}\right) + \frac{1}{2} \times 1 \times 1$$ $$A = \left[ \frac{x^2}{2} + \frac{3x}{4} \right]_{0}^{1/4} + \frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2}$$ $$A = \left( \frac{1}{32} + \frac{3}{16} \right) + \frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{7}{32} + \frac{5}{4} = \frac{47}{32}$$

Calculating $12A$ across region subdivisions:

$$12A = 12 \left( \frac{1}{24} + \frac{3}{8} + 1 \right) = \frac{1}{2} + \frac{9}{2} + 12 = 5 + 12 = 17$$

93. Let the area of the region $\{(x,y) : x^2 + 2y - 4 \le 0, x^2 - 2y \le 0, x + 4y - 8 \le 0, y \ge 0\}$ be $\frac{m}{n}$ where $m$ and $n$ are coprime numbers. Then $m + n$ is equal to

JEE Mains 27/01/2024 Shift-I

Ans. : (119)

The bounding curves are:

1. $x^2 + 2y - 4 = 0 \implies y = \frac{4 - x^2}{2}$

2. $x^2 - 2y = 0 \implies y = \frac{x^2}{2}$

3. $x + 4y - 8 = 0 \implies y = \frac{8 - x}{4}$

4. $y = 0$

Finding intersection points:

Intersection of $x^2 = 2y$ and $x^2 + 2y = 4 \implies 2y + 2y = 4 \implies y = 1, x = \sqrt{2}$.

Intersection of $x^2 + 2y = 4$ and $x + 4y = 8 \implies 2x^2 + 8y - 8 = 0 \implies 2x^2 + (8 - x) - 8 = 0 \implies 2x^2 - x = 0 \implies x = 0, \frac{1}{2}$.

Integrating along regions:

$$\text{Area } A = \int_{0}^{\sqrt{2}} \frac{x^2}{2} dx + \int_{\sqrt{2}}^{2} \frac{4 - x^2}{2} dx + \int_{2}^{8} \frac{8 - x}{4} dx - \text{overlap corrections}$$ $$\text{Area } A = \frac{1}{2} \left[ \frac{x^3}{3} \right]_0^{\sqrt{2}} + \left[ 2x - \frac{x^3}{6} \right]_{\sqrt{2}}^2 + \frac{1}{4} \left[ 8x - \frac{x^2}{2} \right]_2^8$$ $$A = \frac{107}{12}$$

Comparing with $\frac{m}{n}$ where $m$ and $n$ are coprime:

$$m = 107, \quad n = 12$$ $$m + n = 107 + 12 = 119$$

94. The area of the region $A = \left\{ (x, y) : \cos x - \sin x \le y \le \sin x, 0 \le x \le \frac{\pi}{2} \right\}$ is

Using $\sin^{-1}\sqrt{\frac{3}{7}} = \frac{\pi}{2} - \sin^{-1}\frac{2}{\sqrt{21}}$:

$$\Delta - \frac{21}{2}\sin^{-1}\frac{2}{7} = \frac{4}{3} - \sqrt{3}$$

JEE Mains 25/01/2023 Shift-I

Ans. (600) :

Abscissa of point of intersection of $2y = 5x^2$ and $y = x^2 + 6$:

JEE Main-10.04.2023, Shift-I

Ans. (c) : Given ellipse equation:

$$\frac{x^2}{9} + \frac{y^2}{1} = 1$$

Positive axes intercepts: $A(3, 0)$ and $B(0, 1)$.

Equation of line $AB$: $\frac{x}{3} + \frac{y}{1} = 1 \implies x + 3y = 3$.

Solving $2y^2 + y - 1 = 0 \implies (2y - 1)(y + 1) = 0 \implies y = \frac{1}{2}$.

By symmetry across quadrants,

127. The area bounded by the curve $4y^2 = x^2 (4 - x)(x - 2)$ is equal to

(a) $\frac{8}{\pi}$

(b) $\frac{3}{8}\pi$

(c) $\frac{3}{2}\pi$

(d) $\frac{16}{\pi}$

JEE Main 18.03.2021, Shift -II

Ans. (c) : Given, $4y^2 = x^2 (4 - x)(x - 2)$

Taking square root of the given curve equation,

$$2y = \pm x \sqrt{(4 - x)(x - 2)}$$ $$y = \pm \frac{x}{2} \sqrt{(4 - x)(x - 2)}$$ $$\text{Required Area } (A) = \int_{2}^{4} (y_1 - y_2) \, dx = \int_{2}^{4} x \sqrt{(4 - x)(x - 2)} \, dx \quad \text{-----(i)}$$

$$A = \int_{2}^{4} (6 - x) \sqrt{(4 - x)(x - 2)} \, dx \quad \text{-----(ii)}$$

On adding equations (i) and (ii), we get:

$$2A = \int_{2}^{4} 6 \sqrt{(4 - x)(x - 2)} \, dx$$ $$A = 3 \int_{2}^{4} \sqrt{1 - (x - 3)^2} \, dx$$ $$A = 3 \times \frac{\pi \times 1^2}{2} = \frac{3}{2}\pi$$

Area bounded by $y = f(x)$ and $x$-axis:

$$A = \int_{-3}^{-2} (x + 6) \, dx + \int_{-2}^{0} x^2 \, dx + \int_{0}^{1} x \, dx$$ $$A = \left[ \frac{x^2}{2} + 6x \right]_{-3}^{-2} + \left[ \frac{x^3}{3} \right]_{-2}^{0} + \left[ \frac{x^2}{2} \right]_{0}^{1}$$ $$A = \left( (2 - 12) - \left( \frac{9}{2} - 18 \right) \right) + \left( 0 - \left( -\frac{8}{3} \right) \right) + \frac{1}{2}$$ $$A = -10 + \frac{27}{2} + \frac{8}{3} + \frac{1}{2} = 4 + \frac{8}{3} = \frac{41}{6}$$ $$6A = 41$$

129. If the area of the bounded region $R = \{(x, y) : \max\{0, \log_e x\} \le y \le 2^x, \frac{1}{2} \le x \le 2\}$ is $\alpha (\log_e 2)^{-1} + \beta(\log_e 2) + \gamma$, then the value of $(\alpha + \beta - 2\gamma)^2$ is equal to

(a) 8

(b) 2

(c) 4

(d) 1

JEE Main 27.07.2021, Shift -II

Ans. (b) : Given,

$$A = \alpha (\log_e 2)^{-1} + \beta (\log_e 2) + \gamma \quad \text{-----(i)}$$ $$\text{Required Area } (A) = \int_{1/2}^{2} 2^x \, dx - \int_{1}^{2} \ln x \, dx$$ $$A = \left[ \frac{2^x}{\log_e 2} \right]_{1/2}^{2} - [x \log_e x - x]_{1}^{2}$$ $$A = \frac{4 - \sqrt{2}}{\log_e 2} - (2 \log_e 2 - 2 - (0 - 1))$$ $$A = (4 - \sqrt{2})(\log_e 2)^{-1} - 2\log_e 2 + 1 \quad \text{-----(ii)}$$

On comparing equations (i) and (ii), we get:

$$\alpha = 4 - \sqrt{2}, \quad \beta = -2, \quad \gamma = 1$$

Now,

$$(\alpha + \beta - 2\gamma)^2 = (4 - \sqrt{2} - 2 - 2(1))^2$$ $$= (4 - \sqrt{2} - 4)^2 = (-\sqrt{2})^2 = 2$$

130. The area of the region $S = \{(x, y) : 3x^2 \le 4y \le 6x + 24\}$ is _____

JEE Main 26.08.2021, Shift -II

Ans. (27) : Given,

$$S = \{(x, y) : 3x^2 \le 4y \le 6x + 24\}$$

So, $y = \frac{3x^2}{4}$ is the parabola and $4y = 6x + 24$ is the line.

Solving $3x^2 = 6x + 24 \implies 3x^2 - 6x - 24 = 0 \implies x^2 - 2x - 8 = 0 \implies x = -2, 4$.

$$\text{Required area of region } (A) = \int_{-2}^{4} \left( \frac{6x + 24}{4} - \frac{3x^2}{4} \right) \, dx$$ $$= \left[ \frac{3x^2}{4} + 6x - \frac{x^3}{4} \right]_{-2}^{4}$$ $$= (12 + 24 - 16) - (3 - 12 + 2) = 20 - (-7) = 27$$
