Spoken - wake up

Your goal is to speak natural, everyday American English without translating every sentence from Hindi into English.

We'll use the 80/20 Pareto principle: learn the small number of words, phrases, and expressions that you can use in hundreds of daily situations.

  1. getting enough sleep
  2. sleeping on time

Our first topic is:

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Topic 1: เคธुเคฌเคน 5 เคฌเคœे เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เคชเคฐ, เคœाเค—เคจे เคธे เคฒेเค•เคฐ เค‰เค เคจे เคคเค•

We'll cover the English Americans naturally use when they're lying in bed, waking up, checking the time, feeling sleepy, and finally getting up.

Format:

  • เคนिंเคฆी: เค…เคธเคฒी เคชเคฐिเคธ्เคฅिเคคि เคฏा เค•ाเคฎ।
  • Indian English: เคตเคน expression เคœो เคญाเคฐเคคीเคฏ เค…เค•्เคธเคฐ เคฌोเคฒเคคे เคนैं।
  • American English: เคธ्เคตाเคญाเคตिเค• เค…เคฎेเคฐिเค•ी expression।

One important point: Indian English isn't necessarily incorrect. Sometimes Americans simply prefer a different expression.

  • Wake up = เคจींเคฆ เค–ुเคฒเคจा
  • Get up = เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เคธे เค‰เค เคจा
  • Hit snooze = เค…เคฒाเคฐ्เคฎ เค•ो เค•ुเค› เคฆेเคฐ เค•े เคฒिเค เคŸाเคฒเคจा
  • Roll over = เค•เคฐเคตเคŸ เคฌเคฆเคฒเคจा
  • Stay in bed = เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เคฎें เคนी เคชเคก़े เคฐเคนเคจा

The difference between wake up and get up:

You can wake up at 5 AM but stay in bed until 5:30 AM.

You woke up at 5, but you didn't get up until 5:30.

เคฏाเคจी, wake up = เคจींเคฆ เค–ुเคฒเคจा, เคœเคฌเค•ि get up = เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เค›ोเคก़เค•เคฐ เค‰เค เคจा।

เคšเคฒो, เค…เคฌ เค‰เค เคคे เคนैंAll right, let's get up.

Notice how often Americans use short expressions instead of long sentences.

For example:

❌ I am not having the desire to get up from the bed right now.

✅ I don't feel like getting up right now.

The second sounds much more natural in everyday conversation.

Three patterns that will improve your spoken English

Pattern 1: I don't feel like + verb-ing

เคนिंเคฆीEnglish
เค‰เค เคจे เค•ा เคฎเคจ เคจเคนीं เคนैI don't feel like getting up.
เค•ाเคฎ เค•เคฐเคจे เค•ा เคฎเคจ เคจเคนीं เคนैI don't feel like working.
เคฌाเคนเคฐ เคœाเคจे เค•ा เคฎเคจ เคจเคนीं เคนैI don't feel like going out.
เค•िเคธी เคธे เคฌाเคค เค•เคฐเคจे เค•ा เคฎเคจ เคจเคนीं เคนैI don't feel like talking to anyone.

Pattern 2: I've got to + verb

เคนिंเคฆीEnglish
เคฎुเคे เค‰เค เคจा เคนैI've got to get up.
เคฎुเคे เค•ाเคฎ เค•เคฐเคจा เคนैI've got to work.
เคฎुเคे เคคैเคฏाเคฐ เคนोเคจा เคนैI've got to get ready.
เคฎुเคे เคจिเค•เคฒเคจा เคนैI've got to leave.

Pattern 3: I'm about to + verb

เคนिंเคฆीEnglish
เคฎैं เค‰เค เคจे เคนी เคตाเคฒा เคนूँI'm about to get up.
เคฎैं เคธोเคจे เคนी เคตाเคฒा เคนूँI'm about to fall asleep.

เคฎैं เค–ाเคจा เค–ाเคจे เคนी เคตाเคฒा เคนूँI'm about to eat.

Learn these three patterns well. You can use them in hundreds of situations beyond the bedroom.

The Pareto principle isn't just about nouns. Small words and contractions are essential for natural speech.

84เคฌाเคฆ เคฎेंLaterI'll get up later.
85เค…เคฌ เค”เคฐ เคจเคนींAnymoreI can't sleep anymore.

Pay special attention to yet, still, already, and just.

These words occur constantly in everyday English.

Compare:

  • I'm not up yet. = เคฎैं เค…เคญी เคคเค• เค‰เค ा เคจเคนीं เคนूँ।
  • I'm still in bed. = เคฎैं เค…เคญी เคญी เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เคฎें เคนूँ।

Let's extend the topic slightly because these actions naturally follow waking up.

100เคฆिเคจ เค•ी เคถुเคฐुเค†เคค เค•เคฐเคจाStarting my dayStarting my day

A few distinctions worth remembering:

  • Make the bed = เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เค•ो เคต्เคฏเคตเคธ्เคฅिเคค เค•เคฐเคจा।
  • Put on my slippers = เคšเคช्เคชเคฒ เคชเคนเคจเคจा।

  • Check my phone = เคฎोเคฌाเค‡เคฒ เคฆेเค–เคจा เคฏा เคšेเค• เค•เคฐเคจा।

One cultural note: Americans don't all follow the same morning routine. Some shower in the morning, others at night. Both are perfectly normal.

7. The 80/20 plan: What should you memorize first?

You now have 100 expressions and vocabulary items. But don't try to memorize all 100 at once.

Start with these 20 high-value expressions:

8. Your five-minute speaking drill

Don't just read the English. Imagine that you have just woken up at 5 AM and speak the following mini-conversation aloud.

5:00 AM

Oh, it's only five.

I just woke up, but I'm still sleepy.

I don't feel like getting up yet.

Maybe I'll get five more minutes of sleep.

No, I've got to get up.

Come on, get out of bed!

Let me stretch a little.

Okay, I'm finally awake.

Let's check the time.

All right, let's get the day started!

How to practise

  1. First round: Read the English while looking at the Hindi meanings in the tables.
  2. Second round: Read only the Hindi and try to recall the English.
  3. Third round: Speak the mini-conversation without looking at the text.
  4. Next morning: Use at least five expressions while actually getting out of bed.

The goal isn't to sound American by imitating an accent. It's to develop the habit of choosing the same natural expressions that fluent American speakers commonly use.

Your next Pareto topic should be: เคธुเคฌเคน เคฌिเคธ्เคคเคฐ เคธे เค‰เค เคจे เค•े เคฌाเคฆ—เคฌाเคฅเคฐूเคฎ, เคฌ्เคฐเคถ เค•เคฐเคจा, เคจเคนाเคจा, เค•เคชเคก़े เคชเคนเคจเคจा เค”เคฐ เคจाเคถ्เคคा เค•เคฐเคจा। That will extend this vocabulary into a complete morning routine.
